MURAKA | SERIES STATEMENT
My series, Muraka, is named after a place with special meaning in my home country of Estonia. It is one of few remaining wilderness areas and is now a wildlife refuge. The protected wetlands are host to numerous species, ancient islands shaped by rivulets, surrounded by bogs and unspoilt forest. The changing light reflected on the water; the colors of the sky, the patterns the air and wind make; the continuity of change during long summer days, in this timeless, serene world I find inspiration. Watching the colors of the bog change, plants flower and set seed inspire both form and surface with textures, colors and forms found in the pristine remote lands. My abstract biomorphic forms are hand built of porcelain slabs, sanded and layered with colored under glazes, then sanded again to reveal deep surfaces. They are high fired in an electric kiln. I imagine them placed on the land, surrounded, protected and belonging in the bog.
